i usually use my words to express my feelings of gratitude and joy, but for this production i must use the language of interpretive dance. at the moment i'm dancing circles around myself. because this show is just absolutely wonderful and it fulfilled every expectation i had of it, and exceeded … more them as well. how's that?

Marc Sacco with his shirt off was worth the price of admission for this show, but even with out that delicious surprise I loved this interpretation. I never have complaints about the talent of MF's productions, (all were particularly amazing here). Its usually the mind numbing storylines. This was … more much different. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, laughing, smiling, really listening to the lyrics and in the end shedding a tear. Ben - and whoever was smart enough to cast him should be SO proud. He couldn’t have been more believable. Great job by all involved!

With my usual restrained elegance, I went to MUSICALFARE tonight to see FALSETTOS. I had heard about this show, but did not really know what I was going to see. MUSICALFARE is outstanding in its staging, sets, actors, everything to make NYC tremble in its boots. And that is true in this … more production. It is a Jewish story I guess. At least, it is someone's idea of what a Jewish story should be. And it is GAY!!! VERY GAY!!! Which is not something that ever upsets me. As the old saw goes, some of my best friends are... Two acts in which we find a family breaking up as father decides that he is gay and what he wants is a man; leaving his wife and son to deal with the aftermath. A psychiatrist figures in the various sorting outs and becomes a major player in the lives of all. All of this is done with great humor, making gentle fun of various Jewish beliefs, male/female conflicts, disturbed psychiatry (doctor, heal thyself?) and the comehither/goaway play of romance between the sexes.....in song and dance. Applause was loud and sustained after every turn and was well deserved, and also greeted with much laughter. All in all, it is a wonderful show. Unfortunately, I did not know that there is a tragic turn in the end of the second half. It took me into unhappy memories for a bit...which in no way diminishes the wonderful acting, singing, etc...and is still able to incorporate some humor. Making this whole show work so terrifically are Musicalfare stalwarts JOHN FREDO as Marvin, the conflicted husband; LOU COLAIACOVO as Mendel, the hysterical therapist; DEBBIE PAPPAS (looking terrific) as the confused wife, Trina; MARC SACCO as Whizzer, an unabashed gay caballero; MICHELE MARIE ROBERTS and PAMELA ROSE MANGUS as lesbian neighbors; and an outstanding young man, a seventh grader at Orchard Park Middle School, BEN SHAFER, who turns in a great performance as the son of the conflicted couple and subject of a coming Bar Mitzvah which brings all the characters together in preparations and decisions. Despite the small amount of discomfort I felt at the ending, I thoroughly enjoyed this show, applauded loudly and laughed the same. I can thoroughly recommend the show...which is not unusual with MUSICALFARE. A lot of hard work goes into their presentations and it shows. This is a restaging of a show they did some years ago, and they will also be bringing back ZOOMA, ZOOMA, another great presentation.
