If Love Were All
Mary V Loftus, Thursday, September 15th, 2005
Lisa Ludwig with lots of gorgeous gowns; Brian Riggs, looking tall and handsome in a tux or smoking jacket; Teresa Quinn playing piano so very beautifully; great set, great lighting; warm, lovely, nostalgia in both text and songs----what the hell more could anyone want? Oh, I don't know - maybemore some direction and choreography by someone named Jeffry Denman? Maybe Brian and Lisa carrying off great enactments of two of Broadway's greatest bright lights: Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward? In between song and dance, how about brief glimpses of Coward's plays? OK. I am put off by precise British accents. Americans tend to emphasize them so. But it is a very small irritant (and only to me) in a sea of enchantment. Seeing them up there reviving the great days of Broadway, I was suddenly understanding my mother's behavior when she tried so desperately to dress and look like Joan Crawford and/or Ginger Rogers, and to long to leave Buffalo for New York or the West Coast. Imagine having been brought up in a convent school and suddenly being able to see and hear these people! I felt I was seeing them for the first time through her eyes, and I could suddenly relate to her. A big first! But that's how truly they invoke that era, that atmosphere. This is a revival of a show they did in 2000. If you didn't see it then, and even if you did, you owe it to yourself to go see it again. I warn you though - if you have a heart that has ever been hurt - you will feel it start to cry at the ending. Great show, people. Thank you for it. Oh, BY THE WAY - IT'S CALLED IF LOVE WERE ALL!

We just subscribed for the second straight year, have never been disappointed and look forward to upcoming season. NOT a bad seat in the house.
