Superb Performance
Tony Zambito, Saturday, December 9th, 2006
Last night was my first visit to Musicalfare ever. As a native returning home to Buffalo from the west coast after twenty years, it was hard to have any degree of expectations. Well, as a person with theatre experience, the show just blew me away. The talent of the entire cast was superb. The … more choreography of John Fredo was absolutely outstanding given the stage spacials involved as well as making it entertaining. I was especially moved by Kathy Weese and her acting capability in the number "Look of Love". It moved me and brought tears at the edge of my eyes. The following number with reflections on Ellie needing her mother and father put me over the edge. Loraine O'Donnell's performance was stellar and her vocals were outstanding. Kudos to Nicole Cimato for maintaing a graceful presence as well as a warming smile throughout the entire show. The entire cast looks like it was having a blast doing the show and it fused into the audience. Kathy Weese, as Ellie, gave one of the best balanced performances of acting and vocals I've seen in a long time. If you have not seen this show - I urge you not to miss it. You'll walk out feeling like you saw something very special that only comes along once in a while.
LEADER OF THE PACK
Mary Loftus, Wednesday, November 15th, 2006
Oh Ho Hum! How tiresome! Yet another fantastically talented musical show at MusicalFare. These people just don't care how easy it would be to say "That's good enough"! Oh, no. They just have to keep keeping the bar up there in the atmosphere.
So - LEADER OF THE PACK opened tonight and most … more of the crowd were old enough to remember all the great songs from the first time around - 60's, 70's, 80's - and, unbelievably, all from the pen of a woman I never heard of (or, if I did, never paid much attention) even though I sang all but two of those songs many times. (No, not in public. Stop that!)
Hey! Tell me you never doo wopped to "Be My Baby;" "Do Wah Diddy;" "And Then He Kissed Me;" "Da Doo Ron Ron;" and, of course, "Leader of the Pack!" (Sigh! How I dreamed of the Leader of the Pack!) But even if you weren't there for the first go-around, I know you know these great tunes and you will be bopping to the beat when you get your butts down to MusicalFare to see this winner.
Directed by LaLa (Lisa) Ludwig herself; choreographed by Fred's child, John Fredo; music by Michael Hake, Jason Bravo, Mark Partyka and Jeff Cooke; set design (great) by Chris Schenk; lighting & sound by Chris Cavanagh; costumes by Olivia Ebsary (wish I had a couple of them); wigs by Lisa Rokicki. The book is by Anne Beatts; music and lyrics by the unknown to me lady whom this show is about, Ellie Greenwich, this show stars:
Kathy Weese; Robert (Bobby) Cooke; Loraine O'Donnell; Eric Rawski (nice pants Eric); with able assistance from a collection of singers and dancers that make me ache to be able to do that: Nicole Marrale Cimato; Paschal Frisina III; Kelly Jakiel; Andy Moss; Michele Marie Roberts; Marc Sacco; and Elizabeth Urbanczyk.
I have one question: What happened to "We're Gonna Make It After All?" I love that song. It wasn't there! Yeah. I'm greedy. I could have listened to these people all night.
Standing ovation of course. Williamsville is still part of Buffalo. But this audience meant it. I noticed a large number of them doo wopping in their seats during the show. It's great to have kids today appreciating their elders!!!!
Go see this show and have a rollicking good time! Doo wah, doo wah!!!!!
