THE LAST FIVE YEARS
Randall Kramer, Friday, March 24th, 2006
Jay,
Thank you for your comments. We know that THE LAST FIVE YEARS makes our audiences work harder than perhaps they're accustomed to. But, like yourself, if they do, we believe there are benefits that they wont' find in a simpler piece of theatre. That said, I know that a lot of people don't … more want to work but just want to be "entertained." MusicalFare will continue to strive to provide a healthy and interesting mix of all types of musical theatre.

I've been a Musical fan for over 50 years ever since my first Broadway show; South Pacific. I love to be entertained without a lot of thought process. Through the current show, I was priveleged to see another side of musical theatre. NO catchy tunes nothing I could remember yet alone sing or even … more hum.
Instead a memorable pderformance, by a couple of very talented people,of lyrics which told the story in almost operatic fashion. A TRULY POWERFUL SHOW. I left the theatre not only entertained but emlightened Thank you: Randall Kramer,Kathy Weese, Louis Colaiacovo, and the whole Staff.

Off to MusicalFare to see the latest offering, THE LAST FIVE YEARS, by Jason Robert Brown.
OK, I know I'm getting old. No doubt about it. Musicals, for me, were always full of songs that I could sing; music that I could hum. You know what they were because they are still popular today. On … more the other hand, I would find it very difficult to hum a Bach cantata. And whether the younger generation likes it or not, that is what music is becoming.
This is definitely a musical, because everything is sung. Nothing is merely spoken, and there are 14 "songs". There is also musical accompaniment thanks to Michael Hake on piano, Dave Siegfried on Bass and Mark Partyka on Guitar. But, to my less than musically discerning ear, it all sounds like one song, one theme, with variations.
Others may disagree...and that's...OK.
But it doesn't really matter, because this is a play set to music, and it is a very timely play; at times comical, at times deeply moving. I will only say that it is, for me, an indictment of modern relationships and, especially, marriage. Just doesn't work today for many reasons.
But the performers are terrific. Kathy Weese and Lou Colaiacovo are two very appealing people with great voices. And that may be key here, because with two less "nice" and appealing performers, the play could be an ugly one. I suppose that's true of every production though. I just personally thought I would not like it as much. These two made me think of a very similar situation in my own life. I didn't cry, but I felt the silence and the absence. I found myself wishing better for them.
These two left me wondering how in the world they had the energy to even come back on stage for a bow. The production is truly a tournament of endurance - not for the audience---for the performers, although it is only 85 minutes without an intermission.
I do have to say that I thought the music suited Lou's voice more than Kathy's, but she soldiers on with it. And you will enjoy watching them and listening. Kathy produces some electrifying moments with her voice and actions; as does Lou.
The set is wonderful; simple yet wonderfully effective with great graphics. Thank Chris Schenk for that. Lighting and sound by, oh, I don't know.....Chris Cavanagh maybe? Costumes are by Lisa Ludwig and Randy Kramer directed.
So, should you go see it? Not if you are expecting SOUTH PACIFIC. But if you want an honest look at two people searching for a life, and providing great acting and singing, ABSOLUTELY!

What a great show for you to do. I cannot imagine a better space for this show, or a better cast, and production team! Best wishes for it!

What a great show for MusicalFare to do! The music and lyrics are awesome. The story is sometimes humorous, often insightful, and ultimately, heartbreaking. This is the very best of Off Broadway being presented at MusicalFare.
